Catholic Memorial's Class of 2013 saw 153 students graduate on Sunday at the InPro Athletic Center.

And 97 percent of them will attend colleges and universities in the fall. Of those graduates 62 percent will attend schools in Wisconsin.

They include 25 seniors heading to University of Wisconsin-Madison, 31 to UW-Milwaukee or another UW System school, 19 to Marquette University and another seven staying in Waukesha to attend Carroll University or Waukesha County Technical College.

Other graduates are heading to the University of Notre Dame, Washington University and the University of Michigan, said Kristie Arciszewski, CM's communications coordinator.

Almost one-fourth of the graduates will continue their education at a Catholic college or university.

Arciszewski said this year's class has earned $57,725 per student in average college scholarships and awards.

Four of the top students in the Class of 2013 include Jennifer Umhoefer, CM's valedictorian, who is heading to UW-Madison in the fall; Marie Walicki, the salutatorian, who will attend Washington University in St. Louis; Maria Novak, who garnered first honors, is also heading to UW-Madison; and Christine Smith, second honors, is going to Marquette University.

Umhoefer, a Pewaukee resident, graduates with a 4.63 grade-point average. At CMH, she has been on every honor roll and is a member of the National Honor Society.

During her freshman and sophomore years, she played girls volleyball for CMH and club volleyball for the Midwest Penguins. In her junior and senior years, she played on the CMH girls' tennis team.

For the last three years, she has also volunteered at Elmbrook Hospital in both day surgery and post-anesthesia departments. At UW-Madison, Umhoefer plans on majoring in biology with the goal of continuing on to medical school.

Walicki is graduating with a 4.6 GPA. Walicki, of Hartland, moved to Wisconsin from Philadelphia seven years ago. Like Umhoefer, she has been on every honor roll and is a member of the National Honor Society.

She was on the swim team all four years of high school. During her freshman and sophomore years, she was also a member of concert band and for the last three years has been actively involved with CMH's Math League.

And for the last year, Walicki has volunteered with the Waukesha Women's Shelter. At Washington University, Walicki will study medical engineering.

Umhoefer and Walicki both spoke at Sunday's graduation.

Arciszewski said students who receive first and second honors have actively supported the school with many hours of involvement and service.
