From YouTube to the Championships

Waukesha, WI – National Collegiate Table Tennis Association’s (NCTTA) National Championships to be held April 9 - 11 at Center Court Sports Complex and will welcome two Canadian Universities to compete in the championships, with both University of Ottawa and University of Western Ontario teams.

University of Ottawa athlete, Derek Wong started a table tennis team for NCTTA after being inspired by a YouTube video, “Terminal Table Tennis,” posted in 2007 by a team passing time while waiting for their delayed plane en route to the NCTTA championships. This proved to be a successful venture for Mr. Wong, as their team currently stands in 4th place for all universities competing in the championships. The University of Ottawa (UO) currently holds a 11-1 record for 2009/10.

Two key players to watch on UO’s team are Pierre-Luc Hinse and Sara Yuen, both Canadian champions in their respective gender categories and have been national team members for years. Pierre-Luc Hinse recently won the Canadian National Team Challenge last month. Hinse and Yuen will join Wong with the University of Ottawa and over 250 athletes from over 30 colleges and universities.

Mark your calendars for April 9-11 at Center Court Sports Complex to not only join in the fun as a spectator, but an active participant, by learning more about the sport through table tennis clinics and demonstrations. Challenge yourself to a game with a table tennis robot. Participants will all have the chance to win one of the many door prizes given away throughout the event.
