Waukesha sports teams were already lacing it up in the WIAA fall postseason, beginning last week with regional golf and continuing this week with playoff golf and tennis.
Golfers finish year
The Waukesha West/North/West girls golf team competed at Janesville on Monday and took fourth place with a score of 357, 24 strokes shy of qualifying as a team for the year-end state meet at University Ridge in Madison.
Mukwonago and Janesville Parker each shot 333, taking the top two spots in the field and each earning a team berth. Milton was one stroke back at 334.
Top-three finishers on nonqualifying teams also made the cut, with a pair of Milton finishers taking two of those spots. Waukesha's Samantha Joers, who shot 86, came within six strokes of a qualifying berth.
Other golfers competing were Jordan Wiegar (89), Katie Stippich (90), Jessica Kuzniewski (82) and Sydney Rappis (97). Only Joers and Rappis are seniors.
The co-op reached the sectional by taking second place in its own regional, hosted at The Broadlands in North Prairie. The score of 345 was good for second place, with Joers firing 77 and tying with two others for third place. Winegar added 81.
Catholic Memorial, meanwhile, hosted its own regional and finished in second place at The Broadlands, carding 364. The Prairie School (328) led the way behind a round of 70 from Sienna Chapman.
CMH was more than 30 strokes ahead of the first team out. Lauren Klubertanz took second with a round of 77. She was followed by Jessica Heyrman (88), Dana Ahlstrom (91), Alyssa Opiela (108) and Mary Kate Sauer (114).
CMH was slated to play in the Denmark sectional Tuesday.
Tennis teams compete
Arrowhead advanced all seven flights at the Waukesha subsectional Monday, but Waukesha was still able to get representation at the Oconomowoc sectional Wednesday.
In doubles, Waukesha West's Rachel Gantz and Ashley Solberg (23-5) moved forward with the requisite one match victory. Last year, Gantz played at the state meet with partner Cat Phouybanhdyt and won a match at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
West sophomore Brittany Asfeld (17-11) also advanced at No. 1 singles, as did Waukesha South senior Kassie Alexander (19-8).
South freshman Rina Niehoff (12-3) will also play in her first sectional, competing at No. 4 singles.
In Division 2, Catholic Memorial's Catie Fredericks (24-4) advanced at No. 3 singles from the East Troy sectional, as did the top doubles team of Marissa Taugher and Kelly Quartaro (12-3) and the No. 3 unit of Molly Burns and Nicole Schmit (8-4). CMH scored 14 points in the subsectional, while Racine St. Catherine led the way with 24.
Taugher appeared at last year's state meet, paired with now-graduated Elizabeth Diedrich.
Soccer seeds released
The WIAA announced pairings for the upcoming state soccer tournament, with action beginning Oct. 15.
In the new four-division format, two Waukesha schools dipped to Division 2, including Waukesha West, which carries the No. 2 seed in its regional and will host New Berlin West at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15. Brookfield East has the top seed in the grouping of eight.
Waukesha North has the fifth seed in the same grouping and will travel to meet Brookfield Central at 7 p.m. the same night.
Now in Division 3, Catholic Memorial owns the top seed and will host Messmer at 7 p.m. Oct. 15. The Crusaders would ultimately need to defeat Pewaukee, the No. 1 team in the state in Division 3, to reach the state tournament at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
Eighth-seeded Waukesha South drew top seed Kettle Moraine in the first round of the Division 1 draw.
KM has reached the state championship game in Division 1 each of the past two seasons.
