While the city's drinking water is still safe, one of Waukesha's wells had to be shut down last week after a pump failed.
As a result, the city is forced to use radium-contaminated wells that exceed federal limits on radium.
The well that had to be shut down is being treated to remove radium.
However, customers don't face an immediate health risk since federal limits protect customers who drink contaminated water over a lifetime.
The City of Waukesha is under a 2018 deadline to have radium-compliant water.
The city was scheduled to submit its final application to the Department of Natural Resources and the DNR will finalize a draft of the environmental impact statement. The final EIS is scheduled to be issued in early 2014 and the DNR will submit its application to the regional body for consideration.
The city has entered into an agreement with the City of Oak Creek to receive Lake Michigan water but it needs the approval of the eight governors in the Great Lakes region.
