A 17-year-old Waukesha boy has been accused of burglarizing a downtown bike-and-skate shop in April, allegedly stealing more than $7,000 worth of merchandise.
Anthony J. Williams, 529 Elizabeth St., was charged Monday, May 12, in Waukesha County Circuit Court with being party to the crime of burglary, a Class F felony which carries a maximum sentence of 121/2 years in prison and $25,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, Waukesha police were dispatched to investigate a burglary at Trailside Cycle, 732 Clinton St., at 10:45 a.m. April 23.
Surveillance footage showed two suspects kicking in a rear door the night before and looting the shop of bike chains, skate tools, skateboards and bicycles. Also taken was a smartphone and a laptop computer, the complaint states.
Later that afternoon, an employee told police in the complaint he had spotted a suspect, later identified as Williams, riding one of the stolen bicycles on the 300 block of West Main Street.
A witness who came forward on May 2 told police that a teen who identified himself as 'Anthony' had offered to sell him items believed to be stolen during the robbery, the complaint says. The witness could not identify Williams in a lineup but led police to his residence.
Police searched the teen's bedroom with permission from his grandparents and found several skate tools and the cell phone reported stolen, the complaint states. Williams initially denied involvement in the robbery, but then said he served as look out while two other men robbed the store.
The two other men named have not yet been charged in connection to the robbery, court records indicate.
Williams is being held at Waukesha County Jail on a $1,000 cash bond, according to court records.
He was expected to appear at a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, May 21.
