22nd annual spelling bee
The Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha will present its 22nd Annual Corporate Spelling Bee on Thursday, June 5, beginning at 5 p.m., at the Country Springs Hotel in Waukesha.
The event, LCGW's largest fundraiser of the year, is known for its amusing themes. This year's theme is 'Night of the Spelling Dead.'
'We expect to see some exciting costumes from some of our teams,' said LCGW Board President Sarah Stehly.
Businesses and organizations are encouraged to sponsor an employee team, or a non-profit organization that might want to spell. Teams vie for the title of Best Corporate Speller in Waukesha County, which is currently held by MetalTek.
The public is invited to attend the spelling bee and watch these businesses square off against one another. The $30 ticket includes a buffet dinner, entrance to the spelling bee and the opportunity to compete for prizes during a written spelling contest. Raffle tickets will also be sold for prizes.
Classic Cars meet
returns to Gastaus
The free Wednesday Night Classic Cars returns to the parking lot at Weissgerber's Gasthaus, at Grandview and Silvernail, Waukesha.
Anyone is invited to participate. Starting at 5 p.m., the rumble of hotrods from the '50s and '60s roll into position, next to elegant, classy collector cars once driven by the rich and famous.
Spotless engines, polished chrome, new paint and beautifully detailed interiors bring together collectors and the curious public to walk through memory lane and share stories and experiences of the Golden Years of automobiles.
The setting is festive, lively and fun, with live musical groups performing every Wednesday from the festival stage on the grounds.
Food and beverages are offered with a wide variety of sandwiches, burgers, brats, beer and soda.
WCTC offers community firearms training
Community firearms training will be held at Waukesha County Technical College.
Classes on how to choose a personal defense handgun will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7. Topics covered include purpose of firearm, selection considerations, weapon handling session and carry considerations. Cost is $10.79.
Classes on basic handgun safety and shooting fundamentals are 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, June 11 and 18. Topics covered are firearms safety, loading and unloading, shooting fundamentals, dry fire and live fire exercises. Cost is $17.09.
Course fee for both classes for persons 62 and older is 44.

Walk calls attention to brain aneurysms
The second annual 'Awareness to Gain - Walk for your Brain' 5K walk will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14, in Waukesha's Frame Park, 1240 Frame Park Drive.
The event is part of an awareness campaign by the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, a national voice in promoting awareness and supporting research for what it calls 'a common yet little talked about illness.'
Individual and team pre-registrations can be completed online at give.bafound.org/2014Awareness. The $25 fee includes a commemorative T-shirt. Registrations for $30 will also be taken on the day of the event. All proceeds support the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.

WCT auditions for
'The Sound of Music'
Open auditions for the Waukesha Civic Theatre's production of 'The Sound of Music' will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 14; 6:30 to 10 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, June 16 and 17. Callbacks, if needed, will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 19.
No appointment is necessary. Auditions will be held at the Waukesha Civic Theatre Building, 264 W. Main St., Waukesha. Those auditioning should prepare 32 bars of music and provide sheet music in their key for the accompanist. Unaccompanied auditions are discouraged. John Cramer is directing. Rehearsals will start in early-to-mid July. If you will not arrive at auditions until 90 minutes after they start, or later, contact the theater.
The classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical brought to life on the Civic stage. Featuring such beloved songs as 'Edelweiss' and 'My Favorite Things,' The Sound of Music tells the triumphant love story of widower Georg Von Trapp and governess Maria at the dawn of World War II.
All roles are open. There are four or more roles for men age 20-60. There are seven or more roles for women age 20-60. There are three roles for boys age 7 to 19. There are five roles for girls age 5 to 19.

Danny Gokey, a former 'American Idol' contestant, will appear in concert at 7 p.m. Friday, June 27, at Fox River Christian Church, S46 W24130 Lawnsdale Road, Waukesha.

County fair seeking
Fairest of the Fair
The Waukesha County Fair Association is accepting applications for the Waukesha County Fair Fairest of the Fair competition, sponsored by Waukesha Kiwanis and Waukesha County Farm Bureau.
Any Waukesha County resident at least 18 years old (on or before July 16) with fair experience is encouraged to apply. Fairest of the Fair entry forms are available at the website, www.WaukeshaCountyFair.com or via email at susie@waukeshacountyfair.com
All completed applications and photos are due by Friday, June 27, to the fair office. The final competition will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at the Leinie Lodge Stage.

Golf tourney benefits
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Pyramax Bank Four-Ball Golf Challenge to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, will be Monday, July 21, at Hidden Glen Golf Club in Cedarburg.
Morning volunteering begins at 5:30 a.m. Volunteering continues throughout the day and into the evening reception which ends at approximately 8 p.m. Registration and breakfast opens at 6:30 a.m. Golf begins at 8 a.m. The event will conclude at 8 p.m.
Each golf twosome will be flighted according to their combined handicap. With four twosomes in each flight, each golfer will play their own ball and each twosome will rotate playing the other twosomes in their flight for 27 holes total, divided into three nine-hole matches. At the end of the three matches, flight winners will then compete in a shootout to determine the tournament winner.Participation includes golf, riding cart, breakfast, lunch, cocktails, on-course contests, raffles, post-golf reception and dinner, live and silent auctions, cocktails and awards presentation.

Waukesha Civic Theatre to present original comedy
The Waukesha Civic Theatre will present 'Dynamite Comedy' on Friday, July 18.
Some of the Civic Theatre's best and brightest young actors have come together for a comedy experience like no other.
Everything performed in the show is completely original material written and developed by the cast. Comedy scenes, song parodies, and a young cast, ages 10 to 21, are featured in one explosively funny performance. All proceeds from this show go to support A.C.T. (Academy at Civic Theatre), WCT's education program.

UW-W theater group performs 'Kiss Me Kate'
The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha Lunt-Fontanne Ensemble Theatre will draw the curtain for 'Kiss Me Kate,' a musical based on William Shakespeare's comedy 'Taming of the Shrew,' opening at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 18.
Performances continue at 7:30 p.m. Saturday; July 19, Friday, July 25; and Saturday, July 26; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27 in the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on the UW-Waukesha campus, 1500 N. University Drive, Waukesha.

Queensrÿche, Wingers to headline county fair
The Seattle quintet, Queensrÿche and pop rockers Wingers will headline the Waukesha County Fair on Saturday, July 19.
Queensrÿche has sold over 20 million albums sold globally and 6 million in the U.S. alone. The group has toured with groups such as Metallica to Black Sabbath.
Winger formed in 1986 in New York City. In 1990, they were nominated for Best New Heavy Metal Band. Popular classic singles include 'Can't Get Enuff,' which reached No. 6 on the Mainstream Rock charts.

July 16-20 marks the 172nd anniversary of the Waukesha County Fair, the oldest fair in Wisconsin.
Fair's run to benefit paralysis foundation
Registration has begun for the Fourth Annual Fair Fun Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at the Waukesha County Fair.
The Fair is partnering with the Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation and a portion of the proceeds raised will fund research to find a cure for paralysis. The run is sponsored by Pepsi, Bucher Law Group LLC, and R&R Insurance.
Families and runners and walkers of all skill levels are welcome to participate. The 5K run or 2-mile walk course travels the perimeter of the fairgrounds over gravel, grass, dirt (possibly mud) and asphalt. Both the run and walk will finish on the south end of the grounds, near the Leinie Lodge, site of the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast at the Fair. Participants are encouraged to stay and enjoy pancakes after the event for $6.
Prizes will be awarded for Best Team Costume, Best Family Costume and Best Individual Costume. Please keep costumes family–friendly and safe for yourself and those running around you. This year's race will not be timed.
Register before July 1 and receive one all-day admission to the Fair on July 19 and race T-shirt. Cost: $20 adults, $10 children 17 and younger. Team and family discounted registration available through June 30.

WCT gets ready
for 'Annie Jr.'
Registration is open for students ages 6 to 18 who would like to be part of Waukesha Civic Theatre's ACT Productions presentation of 'Annie, Jr.'
ACT Productions gives students the chance to experience an entire rehearsal process while providing classroom opportunities to learn about various aspects of the theater.
'Annie Jr.' is a student production that brings to life one of the world's most beloved musicals of all time. With pluck and positivity, Annie is determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years ago at an orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan.
Rehearsals will begin in June with performances Aug.1-3. For more detailed rehearsal information, contact the theater. Tuition for 'Annie Jr.' is $95.
