The Town of Waukesha Board thought it had its new clerk-treasurer a few weeks ago.
Before Christmas, Supervisor Joe Banske said the board interviewed five candidates for the newly vacated clerk-treasurer's position and two of them were "very qualified."
He said the board made an offer to one of them and that an announcement would come shortly.
But as of this week, Banske said the town has reopened its search.
"We had authorized (Chairman) John (Marek) to make an offer to this person," Banske said. "It was assumed that this person accepted the offer and that she was going to come in and we would start to show her around, but she never showed up."
The Town Board met on Saturday and were scheduled to meet once again on Tuesday night to discuss the position.
Banske was surprised to hear about this latest development.
"I had no knowledge of anything until Saturday," Banske said. "I didn't even know she was supposed to come (last week) but John said I don't think she's coming, so I think we need to start searching again. The consensus was let's start looking around."
Banske wasn't sure when a new clerk-treasurer would be named but didn't expect it to be by the end of the week.
The town is in need of a new clerk-treasurer after Jamie Salentine recently stepped down to pursue another career opportunity.
Neither the town's assistant clerk, Eryn Baudo, or deputy clerk Molly Roamer, initially applied for the position.
While he said Baudo might not have the experience, Banske praised her and her potential. Baudo's position was increased from 22 to 32 hours last year.
"I like her a lot," Banske said. "People in the community like her, she has a great work ethic and we have some good tools around her. I don't know if she's interested but would see it as a great opportunity for her."
Banske said he wants more feedback from board members on the position's criteria and description when looking at potential candidates.
"In my mind I don't think anybody that we interviewed I would want to hire at this point," Banske said.
