The artists decorating the 10-foot and regular-sized guitars for the Waukesha GuitarTown project have been hard at work for weeks.
Another set of artists could soon be at work in downtown Waukesha decorating murals to honor the late Les Paul, a famous musician and inventor who was born and is buried in Waukesha.
The conceptual drawings - which still need city approval - were recently released showing what the murals look like that could be on plastered on downtown buildings this summer.
If approved, the five murals will be painted during the Waukesha GuitarTown Encore festivities, which take place during the opening weekend of the Friday Night Live concert series June 7.
The walls that would have the murals are at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, between Main and South streets; Ace Hardware, at Main and Barstow streets; Bernie's Tap Room, 351 W. Main St.; the Waukesha Monument Company building, 384 W. Main St.; and the Springs Gallery Building, 521 Wisconsin Ave.
The St. Joseph mural would be red and have "The Workshop To The Stage," written across the top depicting Paul at his desk as the inventor in one section and him playing his guitar in another.
The Ace Hardware mural is orange and black and shows instruments Paul used with his nicknames "Wizard of Waukesha" and "Rhubarb Red."
The Bernie's Tap mural has a bold look to it and has the words "Les Paul" in cursive painted on top of six Gibson Les Paul guitars.
The Waukesha Monument mural stands out with a big blue Gibson Les Paul guitar next to the words, "Les Paul: An American Legend." Below that is a quote from Paul.
The final mural at Springs Gallery will spread across the building with the Waukesha GuitarTown logo and the words "Welcome to Waukesha" in yellow.
GuitarTown organizer Norm Bruce said these would be the first in a series of murals painted throughout the summer. They will be done by the Walldogs, a company that paint murals around the country.
"It should be an exciting and a fantastic summer as we expect so many different people coming to see what we have to offer," Bruce said.
