Mama D's Coffee is now open for business in Waukesha.

Diana Markus, also known as Mama D, held a grand opening ceremony Saturday, Oct. 10, at the former Spoon site, 928 N. Hartwell Ave.

Markus has operated Mama D's Coffee in Wales for three years; when property owner Leslie Bley came to her about the Waukesha vacancy, she decided to expand her operation.

Saturday's festivities included complimentary coffee offered by Valentine Coffee, free samples from Sally's Sweet Shoppe and a musical performance from Stan Markus (also known as Papa D).

Diana Markus said the Waukesha location offers the same menu as its Wales location.

Breakfast is served all day. The menu also includes soups, sandwiches, salads as well as bakery items and desserts. There are gluten-free options available, as well.

Customers will see a former element of The Spoon on the exterior of the building, Diana Markus said. She has attached the stainless steel spoon sign created by local metal artist Paul Bobrowitz that was outside the restaurant to her Mama D's sign.

Hours of operation at Mama D's in Waukesha will be 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The coffee shop will be closed on Sunday.

The Spoon closed Aug. 15 after its former operator decided to move on less than six months after reopening the small counter-service restaurant, which specialized in soups, sandwiches and pies.

Before that, Bley operated the small restaurant for a month beginning late last year with her husband after renovating the long-vacant building, which previously housed Niko's Gyros.
