UW-Waukesha hosts Jazz Extravaganza
The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha will host the Jazz Extravaganza at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on campus, 1500 N. University Drive in Waukesha.
Tickets are $5 for general admission.
The Windy Hill Mobile Music Unit and 'Fessor Hurst and His Windy Hill Wizzards Ragtime and Jazz Orchestra, both directed by UW-Waukesha Professor Craig Hurst, and The Jazz Express, led by Mark Helgert, will be featured.
The Mobile Music Unit will perform three songs: the traditional "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," "Goin' to the Mardi Gras," and the Rebirth Brass Band's "Do Watcha Wanna." The other two groups will announce their musical selections from the stage.
County art show displays young talent
The Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services will host the eighth annual Recognizing Outstanding Kids Art Show from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in Room 114 at the Waukesha County Health & Human Services Center, 514 Riverview Ave, Waukesha.
The exhibit acknowledges and displays the creative efforts and artistic talents of young people who are served by the Department.
An artists' reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. At the reception, each of the participating artists will be given individual recognition for their efforts.
UW-Waukesha's gallery features faculty art
Recent work from two members of the University of Wisconsin colleges' art department faculty will be on display in the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha's art gallery through Friday, May 2.
Pieces by Tom Fleming, professor of art at UW-Marathon County, feature salt-fired porcelain, while Frank Zetzman, professor of art at UW-Fox Valley, uses ceramic, acrylic, bone, iron and wood in his work.

Luncheon focuses on human trafficking issues
The Waukesha-based Women's Center's Anniversary Luncheon on Friday, May 2, will feature presentations from local and national experts on human trafficking and on empowering survivors to rebuild their lives.
Keynote Speaker Lisa T.D. Nguyen, founder and executive director of Senhoa Foundation, will discuss how Senhoa addresses modern slavery by working with women and children in Southeast Asia.
Additionally, James L. Santelle, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, will speak to the prevalence of trafficking in the Greater Milwaukee region.
The luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Italian Community Center, 631 E. Chicago St., Milwaukee. The event will run and will include a large silent auction and a raffle. Choral Union performs 'Sunrise Mass'
The lush harmonies and stunning melodies of Ola Gjeilo's "Sunrise Mass" will be performed by Waukesha Choral Union at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at St. William's Church, 440 Moreland Blvd., Waukesha.

Downtown Waukesha's "Mother of All Art Crawls" will be 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 3.

Mob boss to speak at church services
Former mob boss Michael Franzese will speak at RiverGlen Christian Church, S31 W30601 Sunset Drive, for weekend services at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3, and 9 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday May 4.
Franzese will explain how he went from being "one of the biggest money earners the mob had seen since Al Capone," according to Vanity Fair Magazine, to becoming known as the "Born Again Don."

Kiwanis again plan Colorado blue spruce sale
The Waukesha Kiwanis Early Risers will hold their 18th annual Colorado blue spruce tree sale on Saturday, May 3, from 8 a.m. to noon, or until the trees are sold out.
The trees, about 16- to 20-inches tall, will be sold for $4 each. All profits will be donated to local charities.

Parents United presents drug awareness workshop
Parents United will present a free workshop for families, professionals and community members called "Drug Awareness" from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the Country Springs Hotel & Conference Center Ballroom in Pewaukee.
Topics to be discussed include identification of drugs and the effects; overdose statistics; identifying drug uses; statistics regarding drug activity; drug related crimes, prevention, resources; and cell phone behavior/terminology.
Guest speaker is Detective Shawn Diedrich of the Muskego Police Department.

WCTC to offer community firearms training
Community firearms training will be held at Waukesha County Technical College.
Classes on how to choose a personal defense handgun will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. May 3 and 17 and June 7. Topics covered include purpose of firearm, selection considerations, weapon handling session and carry considerations. Cost is $10.11 for May 3 and 17 and $10.79 for June 7.
Classes on basic handgun safety and shooting fundamentals are 6 to 9 p.m. April 23 and 30, June 11 and 18. Topics covered are firearms safety, loading and unloading, shooting fundamentals, dry fire and live fire exercises. Cost is $16.22 for April 23 and 30 and $17.09 for June 11 and 18.
Course fee for both classes for persons 62 and older is 44.

Spirited Child (Parent and child class): Do you feel your home has turned into a battlefield with your child over household rules, homework, or daily chores? Learn the necessary skills you can use to create a home filled with harmony. 3:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 5.
Kids Managing Anger (Parent and child class): Parents learn to deal with their children's anger and frustrations while children learn the tools to curb their anger as well. Parents will meet separately. 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, May 6-27.
ADHD: Parents of children with ADHD will learn strategies in addressing attention issues from a sensory perspective. Discuss environmental modifications, movement activities, schedules, and sensory support to increase focus and have successful involvement throughout the day. 6 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, May 12-19.

Garden space available through UW-Extension
The Waukesha County UW-Extension Community Garden Program still has a few 20-foot by 20-foot garden plots available to rent.
The cost is $40. This covers the cost of plowing and water that is provided throughout the growing season. You must be a Waukesha County Resident to rent a plot.
The gardens are located in Waukesha on Northview Road just east of Grandview Road and just west of the Huber Jail Facility.
Garden Plots will open approximately Saturday, May 17, weather permitting.

Literacy Council plans 22nd annual spelling bee
The Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha will present its 22nd Annual Corporate Spelling Bee on Thursday, June 5, begin at 5 p.m. at the Country Springs Hotel in Waukesha.
The event, LCGW's largest fundraiser of the year, is known for its amusing themes. This year's theme is "Night of the Spelling Dead."
'We expect to see some exciting costumes from some of our teams," said LCGW Board President Sarah Stehly.
Businesses and organizations are encouraged to sponsor an employee team, or a non-profit organization that might want to spell. Teams vie for the title of Best Corporate Speller in Waukesha County, which is currently held by MetalTek.
The public is invited to attend the spelling bee and watch these businesses square off against one another. The $30 ticket includes a buffet dinner, entrance to the spelling bee and the opportunity to compete for prizes during a written spelling contest. Raffle tickets will also be sold for prizes.
WCT gets ready for 'Annie Jr.'
Registration is open for students ages 6 to 18 who would like to be part of Waukesha Civic Theatre's ACT Productions presentation of "Annie, Jr."
ACT Productions gives students the chance to experience an entire rehearsal process while providing classroom opportunities to learn about various aspects of the theater.
"Annie Jr." is a student production that brings to life one of the world's most beloved musicals of all time.

Pyramax Bank Four-Ball Golf Challenge to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, will be Monday, July 21, at Hidden Glen Golf Club in Cedarburg.
Morning volunteering begins at 5:30 a.m. Volunteering continues throughout the day and into the evening reception which ends at approximately 8 p.m. Registration and breakfast opens at 6:30 a.m. Golf begins at 8 a.m. The event will conclude at 8 p.m.

Waukesha County Farm Bureau offers scholarships
The Waukesha County Farm Bureau is offering four scholarships to high school seniors or students already enrolled in higher education.
The Waukesha County Farm Bureau Board of Directors are offering scholarships for students enrolled in any accredited technical school or university for continuing education in agriculture or an agriculture-related field. The scholarship is $500 per student, per school year, and will be available to students in any year of their education. Past recipients may apply again.
