Local walks for cancer scheduled
Onsite registration and early T-shirt pickup for the upcoming ProHealth Care Walks for Cancer will take place at 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, April 25, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 26, in the Waukesha Memorial Hospital's West Entrance, 725 American Ave.
Team captains and individuals who have already registered are invited to pick up their T-shirts and drop off monetary donations. Those who have not already registered can do so at the event and receive a commemorative long-sleeve T-shirt to wear on walk day. The registration fee is $25 until April 29.
Walk participants can make a difference for family, friends and neighbors by supporting specialized cancer services, advanced technology and research.

See how recycling works at open house
A community open house will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 26, at the Waukesha County Materials Recycling Facility, 220 S. Prairie Ave.
Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the facility and learn about how recycling works in Waukesha County. In addition to the tour, attendees can meet and greet with the recycling mascot, Recycle Raccoon, enter to win prizes and enjoy music provided by 99.1 WMYX.
This annual event celebrates Earth Day by taking visitors behind the scenes to see how 90 tons of recyclables are sorted and baled each day for shipment to markets. Everyone will have the opportunity to learn about products made from recycled materials and the impact that the recycling industry has on energy, natural resources and the economy.
Guided tours will run every 15 minutes starting at 9 a.m. All visitors must check in to receive a free tour ticket.

WCTC hosts culinary fundraising event
Waukesha County Technical College's Special Events Management class is hosting Old World/New World Wine and Food Pairing from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in The classic Room (Building A, Room A-161) on the Pewaukee campus.
The event will raise funds for renovations to the culinary kitchen and the college's training restaurant, The Classic Room.
The evening will feature a presentation by Brad Beran, WCTC associate dean of hospitality/culinary management, on how matching wines with specific foods enhance flavors, and a four-course Italian meal prepared by students in WCTC's culinary management program.
Cost of the evening is $75/individual or $125/couple, and cash, check and credit card are accepted. Seating is limited, and the reservation deadline is Friday, April 18. Retzer Nature Center offers Earth Week programs
Retzer Nature Center, S14 W28167 Madison St., is celebrating Earth Week with a day of family activities on Saturday, April 26.
The event includes family activities, adult education on composting and variety of programs for all ages.
A family bird watch starts the day with a guided tour of feathered wildlife includes a half-hour discussion and half-hour hike on wooded and open areas on gentle terrain, near the building.
Visitors can then stop by the nature activities and games area, where from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. kids of all ages will enjoy a variety of crafts and activities by using natural and recycled material.
"Honey, I Shrunk the Solar System," a planetarium show, will be presented every hour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A guided tree and wildflower hike, and music by Tom Pease will follow outdoors.
In the evening, guests can roast marshmallows and listen to campfire songs around the new fire pit, and join in a guided night hike into the Brown's Fen.

County art show displays young talent
On Thursday, May 1, the Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services will host the eighth annual Recognizing Outstanding Kids Art Show from noon to 8 p.m. at the Waukesha County Health & Human Services Center, 514 Riverview Ave, Waukesha, in Room 114.
The exhibit acknowledges and displays the creative efforts and artistic talents of young people who are served by the Department.
An artists' reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. At the reception, each of the participating artists will be given individual recognition for their efforts.
UW-Waukesha's gallery features faculty art
Recent work from two members of the University of Wisconsin colleges' art department faculty will be on display in the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha's art gallery through May 2.
Pieces by Tom Fleming, professor of art at UW-Marathon County, feature salt-fired porcelain, while Frank Zetzman, professor of art at UW-Fox Valley, uses ceramic, acrylic, bone, iron and wood in his work.

Luncheon focuses on human trafficking issues
The Waukesha-based Women's Center's Anniversary Luncheon on Friday, May 2, will feature presentations from local and national experts on human trafficking and on empowering survivors to rebuild their lives.
Keynote Speaker Lisa T.D. Nguyen, founder and executive director of Senhoa Foundation, will discuss how Senhoa addresses modern slavery by working with women and children in Southeast Asia.
Additionally, James L. Santelle, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, will speak to the prevalence of trafficking in the Greater Milwaukee region.
The luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Italian Community Center, 631 E. Chicago St., Milwaukee. The event will run and will include a large silent auction and a raffle. Choral Union performs 'Sunrise Mass
The lush harmonies and stunning melodies of Ola Gjeilo's "Sunrise Mass" will be performed by Waukesha Choral Union at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at St. William's Church, 440 Moreland Blvd., Waukesha.

Mob boss to speak at church services
Former mob boss Michael Franzese will speak at RiverGlen Christian Church, S31 W30601 Sunset Drive, for weekend services at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3, and 9 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday May 4.
Franzese will explain how he went from being "one of the biggest money earners the mob had seen since Al Capone," according to Vanity Fair Magazine, to becoming known as the "Born Again Don."

Kiwanis again plan Colorado blue spruce sale
The Waukesha Kiwanis Early Risers will hold their 18th annual Colorado blue spruce tree sale on Saturday, May 3, from 8 a.m. to noon, or until the trees are sold out,
The trees, about 16- to 20-inches tall, will be sold for $4 each. All profits will be donated to local charities.

WCTC to offer community firearms training
Community firearms training will be at held Waukesha County Technical College.
Classes on how to choose a personal defense handgun will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. May 3 and 17 and June 7. Topics covered include purpose of firearm, selection considerations, weapon handling session and carry considerations. Cost is $10.11 for May 3 and 17 and $10.79 for June 7.
Classes on basic handgun safety and shooting fundamentals are 6 to 9 p.m. April 23 and 30, June 11 and 18. Topics covered are firearms safety, loading and unloading, shooting fundamentals, dry fire and live fire exercises. Cost is $16.22 for April 23 and 30 and $17.09 for June 11 and 18.
Course fee for both classes for persons 62 and older is 44.

Kids Managing Anger (Parent and child class): Parents learn to deal with their children's anger and frustrations while children learn the tools to curb their anger as well. Parents will meet separately. 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, May 6-27.
ADHD: Parents of children with ADHD will learn strategies in addressing attention issues from a sensory perspective. Discuss environmental modifications, movement activities, schedules, and sensory support to increase focus and have successful involvement throughout the day. 6 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, May 12-19.
Literacy Council needs volunteer tutors
Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha (LCGW) is seeking volunteers to tutor children and adults in reading, writing, math and English as a second language. LCGW has these following hour-long informational meetings scheduled:

· Wednesday, May 14, 1-2 p.m.

Garden space available through UW-Extension
The Waukesha County UW-Extension Community Garden Program still has a few 20-foot by 20-foot garden plots available to rent.
The cost is $40. This covers the cost of plowing and water that is provided throughout the growing season. You must be a Waukesha County Resident to rent a plot.
The gardens are located in Waukesha on Northview Road just east of Grandview Road and just west of the Huber Jail Facility.
Garden Plots will open approximately Saturday, May 17, weather permitting.

WCT gets ready for 'Annie Jr.'
Registration is open for students ages 6 to 18 who would like to be part of Waukesha Civic Theatre's ACT Productions presentation of"Annie, Jr."
ACT Productions gives students the chance to experience an entire rehearsal process while providing classroom opportunities to learn about various aspects of the theater.
"Annie Jr." is a student production that brings to life one of the world's most beloved musicals of all time. With pluck and positivity, Annie is determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years ago at an orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan.
