Museum hosts Civil War event Saturday
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga, in which 24 Waukesha soldiers lost their lives. To honor the memory of these Civil War soldiers, the museum will host a special event for all ages from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Special speakers will be in costume in the Civil War exhibit, crafts for kids, a special scavenger hunt, and special Civil War artifacts and letters brought out of collection storage for one day only. All these activities are included with general museum admission.

Guitar lessons offered at Waukesha museum
In honor of Les Paul's legacy, the Waukesha County Museum and White House of Music have teamed up to provide basic guitar workshops for adults and children of all ages. From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 20 and Sept. 10 at the Waukesha County Museum. Participants will use a provided guitar to learn basic cords from a certified instructor, and play a song by the end of the session.
Cost: $10 per adult and $5 per child 16 and younger per night. Cost includes instructor-led session, use of a guitar during the program, and a goodie bag with coupons and an admission ticket to the museum to see the Les Paul exhibit during regular museum hours. Recycle motor oil
Waukesha County has 18 municipal dropoff sites so residents can recycle waste motor oil and oil filters.
Residents changing their own oil are required to properly dispose of waste oil under Wisconsin state law.
The new law was passed to promote oil recycling and protect the environment.
In 2012, Waukesha County residents saved more than 8,000 gallons of waste oil and 10.1 tons of oil filters from going into landfills through recycling.

Backpack Coalition gets ready for back-to-school
The Waukesha County Backpack Coalition's Fill the Bus Campaign was recently at the Delafield, Mukwonago, Pewaukee Wal-Mart and the Hartland Walgreens accepting donations of backpacks and other school supplies to assist the coalition with providing the necessary school supplies to families in financial hardship throughout Waukesha County.

Calling all vocalists with chorus-quality voices
Waukesha Choral Union, one of Southeastern Wisconsin's most prestigious choral groups, will hold open auditions for its 40th season beginning at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church, 2016 Center Road, Waukesha.
Auditions are by appointment and can be arranged by contacting the membership chairperson at membership@choralunion.orgor calling (262) 893-6309.
Scheduled auditions will last 10 minutes and include vocal exercises, simple music sight-reading and part-singing. An accompanist will be provided.
The 2013-2014 WCU season features the theme of "Light." It includes an Oct. 26 performance of "Requiem," by John Rutter, Dec. 6 and Dec. 8 presentations of "Gloria" by Antonio Vivaldi, a March 23 performance of "Creation," by Franz Haydn and concludes with "Sunrise Mass" on May 3.
