For the second straight mayoral primary in Waukesha, the incumbent mayor finished second in the primary.

It happened again Tuesday when challenger Shawn Reilly, a downtown attorney, finished as the top vote-getter with 1,505 votes or 35 percent of the overall vote, beating out the incumbent.

Like Larry Nelson was four years ago, incumbent Mayor Jeff Scrima finished second in Tuesday's primary. Scrima, who still moves onto the general election, had 1,421 votes, 33 percent of the vote.

The 2014 general election between Reilly and Scrima is April 1.

Common Council President Terry Thieme finished third, but put forth a strong run, with 1,193 votes, 28 percent of the vote.

Mike Volpano, a company trainer, was a distant fourth with 164 votes or just under 4 percent.

Reilly and Scrima will square off in a mayoral debate at 7 p.m. March 3 at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha, Northview Building (Room N133) at 1500 N. University Drive, Waukesha.

The event is open to the public and doesn't require registration.
