Winter is in full swing, and with cold weather comes snow. With snow comes the question — when are Waukesha residents required to clear the snow off the sidewalks?
Whenever there is any ice or snow accumulation, residents and business owners are required to remove snow and manage ice on their sidewalks, according to city ordinance. And, when shoveling, snow can't be thrown onto the street. Neglecting to clear it can result in a fine from the city.
City ordinance states that if snow is not removed, the Department of Public Works can step in and clear the sidewalks.
But first, a DPW inspector will leave a courtesy door-hanger warning the homeowner or business owner to fix the problem within 12 hours.
If the snow isn't removed, the city may have a contractor remove it and charge $2 per lineal foot, under city ordinance.
There is no citation or fine imposed for the first offense; homeowners will receive a warning and fee for removing the snow. After the first offense, a $25 fee may be charged. For a third violation, the fee jumps to $50.
