Waukesha - A Waukesha police officer responding without lights and siren to assist other officers on a call Tuesday night struck a 17-year-old bicyclist, who suffered life-threatening injuries, according to a written statement from Chief Russell P. Jack.

Police Captain Dennis Angle described the boy's condition as "stabilized." He was taken to Children's Hospital by Flight for Life after the accident, which occurred on Highway 164 near Lincoln Ave.

The officer, in his second year with the Waukesha Police Department, according to Angle, used CPR on the youth until the Waukesha Fire Department responded.

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call the department at (262) 524-3765.

According to Jack's statement, the officer was traveling in "a non-emergency fashion" to assist on a call. Two juveniles with bicycles and wearing dark clothing were crossing the uncontrolled intersection when one of them was struck by the squad car.

Several witness statements were taken at the scene and the Wisconsin State Patrol was brought in to conduct the accident investigation. Jack said the officer's duty status has not changed based on the initial investigation.

Waukesha police did not identify the boy or the officer.

About Laurel Walker
Laurel Walker covered local, school and county government for 20 years -- the last half of that at the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel -- before she was named Waukesha County columnist in 1997. Today she writes about the people, places and events around metropolitan Milwaukee with a broad suburban focus. She was the youngest of nine children raised on a central Wisconsin farm before leaving the nest for journalism studies at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a masters degree at the University of Oregon. She has spent the last half of her life in Waukesha County, where she and her husband raised two sons. Though she has a fondness for life in Waukesha, she eagerly partakes in the culture of the big city to the east and the recreation of the forests to the west. With sons in the arts, she has a special fondness for symphonic music concerts and art museums. She finds peace in a good book at a Northwoods getaway weekend, adventure in family visits to the east and west coasts, and satisfaction in a column well-written that reaches readers.
