Waukesha West downs Ike in overtime in soccer sectional semifinal
For the second time in as many years, the New Berlin Eisenhower girls soccer team saw its season end against Waukesha West.
The Lions fell, 4-3, in overtime to the Wolverines in the team's sectional semifinal this afternoon at Eisenhower.
Senior defender Amanda DuPont netted her first two scores of the season for the Lions, the second of which came with less than 4 minutes left in the second half to force overtime.
But Wolverine forward Caysi Shouse dribbled through traffic and and scored the game-winning goal, which just barely clipped the fingertips of goalie Kelsey Braatz, at the 6:05 mark in overtime.
Kaley Shandley put the Lions ahead, 1-0, midway though the first half on a corner kick score and DuPont's first goal, a 30-yard direct kick, gave Eisenhower a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Each week,Muskego gets a $500,000 state grant for Parkland Mall redevelopment
Muskego — The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation announced July 21 that Muskego will receive a $500,000 grant to assist development of the planned Parkland Towne Center. The 10-acre vacant site was developed in the 1970s as Parkland Mall, which was razed in 1998.
The Muskego Community Development Authority met July 19, but community development director Jeff Muenkel had hinted to CDA board members that the city would land the WEDC grant, noting that he expected ground to be broken later this summer on the $34 million development.
"We're very excited," Muenkel said after the official announcement. "It's the culmination of what should be a wonderful project for Muskego's downtown. That's $500,000 the city won't have to borrow" for its commitment to the project.
The grant and matching funds from the city will be used for infrastructure improvements including utilities, roads, sewer and water connections and electrical upgrades. The city has committed up to $6.8 million toward the project, mainly funded through tax incremental financing.

Early on, the New Berlin West baseball team was struggling to get on track.
Picked to finish fifth in the six-team Woodland West, the Vikings were 3-5 on June 3 following consecutive losses to Wauwatosa West and Whitnall. But starting with a two-game sweep of Pius XI Catholic, New Berlin West found its identity as a resilient, tough-minded team that could win close games.
The Vikings won 16 of their last 21 games and seven of their last eight, winning the Woodland Conference tournament in the process. New Berlin West beat Greenfield in a WIAA regional semifinal before falling 3-2 to Greendale in a regional final to finish at 19-10.
"Understandably with a young group, we didn't start out great," New Berlin West coach Tom Farina said. "We were hovering a couple of games under .500. We got to .500, and all of a sudden things clicked for them as a group. Once things clicked for them as a group, it was very exciting. Nineteen wins is not something to sneeze at. We had a lot of big wins and a couple of tough losses. That's all part of the growing process. I'm very proud of our team."

More than 15 people gathered for the Muskego Recreation Department's kayaking trip on Big Muskego Lake. City recreation specialist Adam Young talked to them about the lake and the group's upcoming journey.
Young has been with the department a little over one year and wanted to display the lake's ecology and wildlife it supports through noninvasive kayaking trips.
"I want to share my passion for water with people," Young said. "I want them to know that resource is there for them. It's surprising at times but also not. They just don't think about it. That this resource is there for them."
The trips allow kayakers, both inexperienced and experienced alike, to glide around the lake viewing eagles and Osprey nests along with other wildlife. Running from 6 to 9 p.m. the lake also provides the perfect stage for a sunset viewing.

It is hard to imagine two more evenly matched teams than New Berlin West and Greendale.
The Vikings and Panthers entered their WIAA regional final matchup having played three one-run games this season — two in the regular season and another in the Woodland Conference tournament championship game.
With a trip to the sectional on the line, the two teams played yet another one-run game. This time Greendale came out on top, as the Panthers got a clutch sixth-inning hit from freshman J.R Muth to come away with a 3-2 win over New Berlin West.
"All four of our games were identical," New Berlin West coach Tom Farina said. "Neither one of us could beat the other one two times in a row. We kept trading wins and losses. Each one of us had a big win. We won to win the conference championship title, and they won to move on to the sectionals.
"It was one of the more amazing things I've seen in all the years I've been coaching. All the games were well-played, exciting games."

There isn't an easy way for a team to have its season come to a close, but some endings are tougher to take than others. One out away from advancing in the WIAA baseball tournament, the New Berlin Eisenhower baseball team couldn't close out Cudahy.
The ninth-seeded Packers tied the game in the seventh and took the lead in the eighth in a 4-2 win over the eighth-seeded Lions in a regional game at Mike Neufeldt Field.
With Eisenhower leading 2-1 with two outs in the seventh, Cudahy's Dylan Maxwell kept the game alive by drawing a walk on a 3-2 pitch. Brandon Stachowiak followed with a single to right to move the tying run into scoring position.
Lion starter Boden Saikie, who twirled a gem for Eisenhower, walked Danny Hahn to load the bases. Reliever Bryce Wesling then walked Sam Wojs to force in the tying run. Wesling recovered to strike out Sam Sagan to keep the game tied.
After Wesling retired the first two batters he faced in the eighth, Alex Valine and Dawson Povolo hit consecutive singles and Brandon Ray reached on an infield single to load the bases.

A hearing for former West Bend city administrator Thomas Justice on child enticement charges in Muskego was delayed Monday until Aug. 12, at the request of his attorney.
Susan Roth, representing Justice who now lives in Cincinnati, asked for the postponement because negotiations are ongoing with state officials. He pleaded not guilty June 9.
According to the criminal complaint, Justice allegedly was in contact with the Muskego girl, now 17, over a three-year period, starting in 2013. Justice didn't realize she was under 18 until September 2015, according to a search warrant filed April 27. He objected, "You said you were in college," the warrant says. But then he said he was still interested in paying for sex, according to a text message excerpt the warrant contains.
Justice was arrested in Muskego allegedly on his way to meet the girl. However by then, a Muskego police detective had taken the girl's place online so police were ready to arrest him when he came to the city.
