Waukesha - Mayor Jeff Scrima has scheduled separate meetings next month with Oak Creek Mayor Richard Bolender and Racine Mayor John Dickert to discuss purchase of Lake Michigan water from either of the potential suppliers.

On June 14, Scrima will meet with Bolender, Oak Creek City Attorney Lawrence Haskin and Water and Sewer Utility General Manager Steven Yttri at the utility offices in Oak Creek.

Dickert, Racine City Administrator Thomas Friedel and Water and Wastewater Utilities General Manager Keith Haas will meet with Scrima on June 30 at Racine City Hall.

Scrima has invited common council members to participate in the meetings, Common Council President Paul Ybarra said. Ybarra said Wednesday that he likely will join Scrima at the meetings.

Scrima and Ybarra met separately with Milwaukee Common Council members this month to discuss possible purchase of water from Milwaukee.

On May 20, Water Utility General Manager Dan Duchniak submitted a request to switch to a Lake Michigan water supply to the state Department of Natural Resources. The city proposes diverting up to an average of 10.9 million gallons of Lake Michigan water a day after 2035 to serve residents and businesses.

The application must be approved by Wisconsin and each of the other seven Great Lakes states, under terms of a 2008 Great Lakes protection compact.
