The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has named an associate dean at Marquette University's College of Education as the next head of southeast Wisconsin's Catholic school system.

Kathleen Cepelka, who was the principal of Waukesha's Catholic Memorial High School for eight years before assuming her job as associate dean and director of teacher education at Marquette in 2007, is slated to start on July 1.

"Dr. Cepelka brings extraordinary credentials to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee," Archbishop Jerome Listecki said in a news release announcing her appointment. "She will be an asset to our school staff, parents, students and supporters of Catholic schools."

The archdiocese's search for a new school head was launched after former superintendent David Lodes resigned in January, following his arrest for second offense driving while intoxicated.

As superintendent, Cepelka will oversee 127 schools scattered across 10 counties in the archdiocese.
