Curious lights in Waukesha County sky might have been comet

Strange lights caught the attention of residents watching the sky over Waukesha County last night, prompting deputies from the sheriff's department to check out what might be happening.

What did they see?

"Nothing," said sheriff's Capt. Karen Ruff.

"Our UFO" is how Ruff described what might initially play through the minds of onlookers until further investigation revealed what might have actually occurred.

"I'm being told by other sources that there's a possibility that there's a comet that went through the sky last night," Ruff said this morning, citing a report on WTMJ-AM (620), which also received calls from listeners about what they were seeing.

Ruff said the first call came into the sheriff's department at 6:31 p.m. on Tuesday when a woman in the Town of Ottawa said she saw a red and blue light in the sky to the east.

"She said it didn't appear as if it was moving. She thought it might be a satellite but wasn't sure," Ruff said.

Then at 7:16 p.m., another caller looking to the west reported from the area of Crites Field that there was an object in the sky that "was standing still and had numerous lights."

The caller said "it appeared too large to be a planet but didn't look like it was an airplane or a helicopter," according to Ruff.

"We had no idea what it was," Ruff said.

Deputies went out to take a look to make sure there wasn't a problem with an aircraft or a helicopter.

Ruff said citizens should always call authorities when they observe anything strange because such lights might sometimes indicate an aircraft in trouble or lines sparking on an electrical pole.

"If people see things like this we do want them to call," she said. "It's something that we do need to check."
