Key Westconsin — the tropical-themed restaurant along downtown Waukesha's riverfront — served its final plate on Saturday, Feb. 13.

Owners Rita and Gary Krivos, who opened the seafood and gluten-free restaurant in January 2011, said "many factors" led to the closing.

"It is with overwhelming sorrow we announce the closing of Key Westconsin," the Waukesha couple said in a Facebook post. "Many factors have led us to this decision and it was certainly not made lightly.

"To all of you who supported us over the past five years — we thank you. The best part of this endeavor was the opportunity to meet and build relationships with so many wonderful people.

"We will carry you with us in our hearts forever, and hopefully in some small way we have touched your lives as you have ours."

The restaurant, 331 Riverfront Plaza, fell on tough financial times in the last couple of years as it started a Go Fund Me crowdsourcing page in March 2015 in an attempt to raise about $30,000 for repairs within the eatery.

The Krivos' said last year "the biggest financial blow" came when they had to replace the motor on the restaurant's HVAC unit. The couple also asked the public to help with oven repairs. The campaign raised about $3,700.

The Krivos' said a brutal winter in 2013-14 hurt the business and road construction in front of its restaurant the following spring and summer also had a negative impact.

The restaurant's name and theme centered around Gary Krivos' love of the Florida Keys, especially Key West.

The restaurant had been recipients of the Blue Ribbon Award from TODAY'S TMJ4 for clean dining after receiving a 100 percent on its annual health inspections by the Health Department for five straight years.
