A 52-year-old man suspected of being drunk broke his hip in a head-on crash while driving the wrong-way on Highway 18 in Waukesha.

The man was driving a BMW about 12:30 a.m. Thursday eastbound, against traffic, when he hit a westbound semitrailer truck, according to Waukesha police. The driver of the truck saw the vehicle and was in the process of stopping when the crash occurred, police said.

In addition to the broken hip, the car's driver suffered bruises and facial cuts and was taken by helicopter to Froedtert Hospital, where he was in stable condition. Police say the driver admitted to drinking before the crash and was cited for operating while intoxicated.

The 68-year-old driver of the semi was treated on scene by fire department personnel for minor injuries and voluntarily submitted to a blood test. Authorities do not believe he was impaired.

The semi was not carrying a load, and neither vehicle had any passengers.
