After 28 years of having the same attorney, the City of Waukesha will have a change next spring.
Longtime city attorney Curt Meitz will not seek re-election as he filed for non-candidacy with Clerk-Treasurer Gina Kozlik today.
Meitz has held the position since 1985 when he took over for former city attorney George Lawler. He finished out the remainder of the term and then defeated Jess Martinez Jr. in 1986, Kozlik said.
That was the only time Meitz had a challenger in an election, Kozlik said.
He would have had one this year.
Kozlik said on Thursday that local attorney Brian Running has filed a campaign registration statement for the position.
Running, who earned his law degree from Marquette University in 1989, has operated his own law office in Waukesha since 1995.
His office is at 300 Wisconsin Ave., near Cutler Park.
Waukesha NOW has put in a call to Meitz's office.
Candidates have until Jan. 7, 2014 to file a campaign registration statement, declaration of candidacy and nomination papers to the clerk/treasurer office at City Hall.
Meanwhile, three individuals so far (Common Council President Terry Thieme, downtown attorney Shawn Reilly and Mike Volpano, who teaches business part-time at Waukesha County Technical College and is a company trainer for a market research company) have filed registration statements for Waukesha's mayoral election.
Mayor Jeff Scrima has yet to file and hasn't said if he plans on seeking a second term.
Primaries will be held on Feb. 18, 2014.
