Carroll University unveiled plans Wednesday of a new 50,000-square-foot state-of-the-art science center.
The building, which would cost about $22 to $24 million, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016.
According to a university news release, one story will be below ground level and three stories will be above ground level. The center will be on the northeast corner of College Avenue and Barstow Street.
Maxon Hall, the building at that site which houses classrooms, faculty offices and the environmental science program, will be demolished for the new center.
The building will extend closer to College Avenue to the south and to Carroll's Rankin Hall to the east.
The new building will house laboratories for biology, chemistry and biochemistry, some faculty offices and gathering spaces for students.
About two-thirds of Carroll students major in one of the sciences and that biology, physical therapy and exercise science are among the most popular academic disciplines, the news release states.
"We have known for quite some time that we need new laboratory facilities," Carroll President Douglas Hastad said. "The project has been a priority for several years. The time has come to get it done."
New dorm: This announcement comes as a new three-story co-ed suite-style facility opens at Carroll this weekend.
Prairie Hall, which has two, three, four, or five-bedroom units, is available to 128 students. It features private bedrooms, one or two bathrooms, a living area and kitchen.
Each floor also features a kitchen, lounge, study and laundry room. It also offers air conditioning, like Carroll's Pioneer and Frontier Halls, as well as limited underground parking.
