Although heavy opposition, Waukesha Plan Commission approves updates to Meijer development

Those against the new Meijer development came out in full force Wednesday night at Waukesha's Plan Commission meeting.

The residents, many of whom live near the proposed 192,940 square-foot retail store at the southeast corner of Sunset Drive and Tenny Avenue, held yellow signs with the word "Meijer" slashed through it when they didn't like what they heard from the developers or the Plan Commission.

Nevertheless, the Plan Commission, after hearing a revised plan from City Planner Jennifer Andrews, unanimously approved the updates. This came after comments and a lengthy question and answer discussion that included residents, Meijer officials and Plan Commission members.

One update, after a traffic study, included having just one entrance and exit way on the west side, instead of two. Andrews also noted more landscaping would be going up to help block the noise and light on the 29-acre parcel of land.

For most residents and Alderman Steve Johnson, also in attendance at the meeting who represents this district, it wasn't enough.

Johnson wants the supercenter to eliminate the 24-hour component as well as the 2,509-square-foot gas station that would go along with it.

But Brian Randall, the attorney who represents Meijer, said those aspects are "part of what Meijer offers."

If Meijer, a food, clothing and home good merchandising center, gets the final approval it needs, construction could start in early 2014.

A public hearing before the Common Council is scheduled for Aug. 8 at the City Hall Council Chambers, 201 Delafied St.
