Reports of gunfire Tuesday night in Waukesha prompted substantial police response, but responding officers found only fired gun cartridges and no one injured.

Numerous 911 callers reported shots fired around the 1500 block of Big Bend Road, Waukesha police said. The area was locked down while an extensive search was conducted, with help from sheriff's deputies and the county K9 unit, as well as New Berlin and Brookfield police.

Witnesses described people fleeing the scene in a white SUV and an older-model four-door sedan. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Dave Feyen at (262) 524-3784.
