The Waukesha West academic decathlon team finished ninth overall and second among Division II schools at the national academic decathlon championships last weekend.

It was the team's 12th straight appearance at nationals, which took place this year in Minneapolis.

While the team didn't win the title, West had one of the shining stars of the event.

Senior Thomas Redding achieved gold medal in math with the highest score in that subject among all the decathletes and earned $1,000 in scholarship money for his efforts in the competition.

Waukesha West was second at last month's state competition behind New Berlin Eisenhower.

Eisenhower, a newcomer to the national event, was 14th overall and second among Division III schools.

As a result, the Lions were named the Division III Rookie of the Year.
