Adopt-a-pet program for veterans expands to Waukesha County
Veterans recovering from post traumatic stress, traumatic brain injuries and other psychological challenges from their military service may be eligible for a free pet through Companions for Heroes, which recently selected the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County as one of its animal shelter partners.
Companions for Heroes facilitates adoption of shelter animals for wounded warriors and first responders. The pets help provide a sense of purpose as well as minimize stress, depression, loneliness and isolation for veterans.
To adopt a pet through Companions for Heroes, an Arlington, Va.-based nonprofit organization, fill out an application at companionsforheroes.org. Once applications have been approved, veterans and first responders in southeastern Wisconsin will be sent to the Waukesha County animal shelter to continue the adoption process.
