Man suspected of shooting at Waukesha officers remains jailed
Waukesha - A 76-year-old man suspected of being involved in a shootout Tuesday afternoon with police at an E. Racine Ave. residence remains in police custody awaiting multiple criminal charges, Captain Ron Oremus said Wednesday.
The man was inside a residence at Wyndwood Condominiums in the 1800 block of E. Racine Ave. when police arrived at 4:18 p.m. in response to a domestic violence complaint, Oremus said.
The man does not live there, but he was holding the victim, his ex-wife, against her will, Oremus said. Officers were talking to the victim, a 75-year-old woman, at the front door of the residence when the man appeared inside, pointed a "long gun" and shot at the officers.
The officers returned fire, left the condominium unit with the woman and called for assistance. No one was struck by the gunfire.
The suspect surrendered at 5:16 p.m.
The couple divorced in 2010. Waukesha County court records show the court imposed a four-year injunction on the man in 2010 in response to domestic violence complaints. Among the terms of the injunction was that he surrender his three firearms to a son.
City police will seek criminal charges of domestic abuse-battery, false imprisonment, violating the injunction and weapons-related charges against the man in this incident, Oremus said.
The incident remains under investigation.
