While it will be a different format from its original store, Walmart is returning to the Town of Waukesha.
After getting a recommendation from the Planning Commission at a Joint Meeting with the Plan Commission and Town Board Thursday night, the Town Board unanimously approved the Walmart Neighborhood Market, W226 S1500 on Highway 164.
The 42,000 square-foot Walmart Neighborhood Market would replace the Walmart discount store that closed in 2010 after a Walmart Supercenter opened at 2000 S. West Ave., north of Highway 59 on the City of Waukesha's southwest side.
The market will include a supermarket with deli, bakery and liquor departments, a full-service pharmacy and pharmacy drive-through.
Walmart Neighborhood Markets were designed in 1998 as a smaller-footprint option with a pharmacy and where customers can buy groceries and merchandise. There are about 200 Neighborhood Markets in the U.S.
The Town of Waukesha will become the latest community in southeastern Wisconsin to recently welcome a Walmart Neighborhood Market. The cities of Milwaukee and Wauwatosa opened Markets this summer and one in Menomonee Falls is scheduled to open soon.
Construction at the Town of Waukesha location is scheduled to begin next spring and be completed before the 2013 holiday season.
After giving a presentation to the Town Board last month, Walmart representatives revisited the development Thursday and updated the project with improvements.
The Market would add 65 to 100 jobs, 60 percent of which will be full-time.
The initial phase will consist of the demolition of the existing 120,000 square-foot store structure and the construction of the Market and related improvements.
A secondary phase will consist of dividing the remaining area of the property into commercial development by others, the plan of operation indicates.
