Quick response by Waukesha police to a domestic incident Thursday prevented a violent encounter from becoming deadly.

Officers were called to a home in the 1700 block of Oak Ridge Court about 9:40 a.m. and found a 25-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her neck, Waukesha police Sgt. Jerry Habanek said. She told police her boyfriend was still inside with a gun. Habanek said the woman's wound was not life threatening.

Police set up a perimeter around the house and eventually made phone contact with the 32-year-old man inside. Negotiators were able to get him to surrender without incident about 2:25 p.m., Habanek said.

The man had suffered a gunshot wound to his hand, Habanek said, and was arrested and transferred to a hospital for treatment and a psychological evaluation.
