Common Council will discuss removing Waukesha's downtown BID Board

The Common Council is going to get involved.

At the request of Ald. Kathleen Cummings and Ald. Eric Payne, Waukesha's Common Council will discuss and recommend the removal of the 13-member downtown Business Improvement District Board at its Tuesday meeting.

Over the last month Council members have watched as downtown business owners, BID board members and its former executive director have aired their dirty laundry in public.

Board members have accused other board members of bullying and others voted no-confidence in the current leadership at a recent meeting.

While individuals on the Board and in downtown have said that these aren't new problems, everything erupted after Meghan Sprager resigned from her position as executive director and sent out a resignation letter that cited a hostile work environment.

Her assistant, John Ward, then resigned, as did two BID Board members, Christine VanderBloemen and Jeff Barta, who cited the Board's lack of leadership as reasons for their departure.

Both had asked that the Council needed to step in for a change to occur.

Before that meeting, a Special BID Board of Directors meeting will take place at 4:30 p.m. Monday at The Rotunda, 235 W. Broadway, in downtown Waukesha.

The board will discuss and possibly take action on providing authorization to hire temporary employees for BID tasks now that Sprager is gone.

The agenda says that BID President Norm Bruce will provide a recommendation to which individuals will fill the positions with a pay rate and the number of hours needed for each position.

The positions that need to be filled are an interim Farmers Market manager, interim assistant to the Farmers Market manager, interim office manager, interim social media employees (two intern positions) and a temporary Christmas Parade manager.

In other business at the Common Council meeting, a motion will be made to go into closed session to discuss negotiations for a potential contract with Oak Creek or Racine as it relates to the City of Waukesha's Application for Great Lakes Water.

The Common Council meets at 7:30 p.m. inside City Hall's Council Chambers, 201 Delafield St.
