This weekend’s soccer tournament at Waukesha South High School is in memory of Sam Beres, who died at age 6 of leukemia. It is being hosted by the Catholic Memorial High School varsity boys soccer team.
Proceeds from the 8th annual Sam Beres Soccer Tournament, Friday and Saturday, will be donated to the Medical College of Wisconsin for leukemia research.
The tournament is at Waukesha South High School, the home field CMH shares with Waukesha South at 401 E. Roberta Ave.
Sam, who lost his battle with leukemia in April 2000, was the nephew of CMH varsity soccer coach and alumnus, John Bisswurm ’77, and brother of CMH JV soccer coach and alumnus, Jordan Beres ‘09. Bisswurm, who is in his 33rd year of coaching for CMH, also heads the family business, International Concrete Products in Germantown.
"On behalf of the entire Bisswurm family I am very grateful and proud of the charitable work done by the students and families of the CMH boys soccer program for two causes that have deeply impacted my life," Bisswurm said.
In addition to raising money for leukemia, the CMH boys’ soccer team is collecting new or gently used soccer gear for children in Guatemala. This past summer the former CMH JV boys’ soccer uniforms were given to children in Guatemala as part of Futbol por Guatemateos. Donations will be accepted at the tournament.
The alumni soccer game will follow the championship match. All former players, no matter the age, are encouraged to participate.
Tournament games start at 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors and free for children 6 and younger.
