Retzer Nature Center evacuated for suspicious device
Waukesha - Retzer Nature Center was evacuated Tuesday after a suspected pipe bomb was found by a groundskeeper who was emptying trash and recyclables containers, the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department said.
The device was discovered between 11 a.m. and noon, sheriff's detective Steve Pederson said.
The Milwaukee Police Department's Hazardous Devices Unit was called and detonated the device, Pederson said.
The pipe with two caps on it did not contain any other material, authorities determined.
At the time the device was found, students from a school were on a field trip at the center, a Waukesha County parks facility, Pederson said.
The students, others on the grounds and employees were evacuated, he said.
