Becca Richter wins Big Star U.S. Tour regional singing competition

Maternal inspiration – Becca Richter, 2012 Distinguished Young Woman of Waukesha, has been inspired by her mother, Valerie, who was Oak Creek’s 1988 Junior Miss.

The year just keeps getting better and better for Becca Richter.

She already represented Waukesha in the 2012 Distinguished Young Women of Wisconsin competition during the summer, put out her first CD, is in the process of a second one and just continued to wow judges and crowds at various venues all year with her soothing singing voice and her superb guitar skills.

And the 17-year-old singer/songwriter was at it again last week.

The Waukesha North High School senior won the “Big Star U.S. Tour” competition – a regional singing contest held at The Majestic Theater in Madison.

The competition featured singers/songwriters from around the state who performed two of their original songs.

Richter sang, “I Know Your Name” and “You’re the One,” two new songs she has written after the release of her first CD, “Little Things,” which came out during the fall.

Valerie, her mother and manager, said her daughter overwhelmingly won by the loud audience applause and was awarded $100.

More importantly, though, because of her win, Richter’s music will now be forwarded to music legends and other big name producers such as Bobby Kimball, lead singer of Toto and Jeff Cook of Alabama, as well as music executives like Kevin Hovey, who works with artists Adele, Prince, Mariah Carey and Ricky Martin.

Richter will join the other regional winners from around the country for the finale, which takes place in Minneapolis next year, for a chance to win $1,000 worth of music and national exposure.

The “Big Star U.S. Tour” seeks undiscovered singer/songwriters or stars yet to be found. While national music pundits could soon discover her, Richter has already been discovered at the state and local level becoming a popular booking for local coffee shops, festivals and other concerts.

She’ll display these talents once more when she performs in the “Milwaukee’s Got Talent” competition on Friday at the Frontier Airlines Convention Center as part of Milwaukee’s Winterfest. Richter will also sing at 11 a.m. Dec. 26 and at 5 p.m. Dec. 28 during the Winterfest festivities.

Other accomplishments for Richter this year was recently moving to No. 1 on the Video of the Year charts on the Teenage Rockstar website, had her original song, “Honey Bee,” chosen as the winning entry for the 2011 May YobiSing contest, had the opportunity to sing in Nashville, Tenn., and was named “Artist of the Month” in the Teenage Rockstar competition based in Germany.

But this teen sensation doesn’t simply sing for fame and recognition. Richter will use her talents in a few weeks to help those in need as she, along with other aspiring area musicians, will perform at a benefit concert titled, “Fight Night 2012.”

The concert, which takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 6 at the Waukesha North Auditorium, is a way to raise money and awareness for duchenne muscular dystrophy – a rapidly-worsening form of muscular dystrophy. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Here are also two stories Waukesha NOW did on the rising star. One was just after she competed in the Distinguished Young Women of Wisconsin competition and the other was a Q & A on the heels of her CD release party in October.
