Jane Ameel has spent the better part of four decades using her quiet voice inside a library.

But next year she will step down as the director of the Waukesha Public Library, as Ameel announced her retirement effective May 1, 2012.

Ameel has worked in libraries for 38 years, including 27 years as Waukesha’s director.

She has been at the helm of three expansions and renovation projects in Waukesha, the formation of the CAFÉ (Catalog Access for Everyone) consortium of local libraries, the development of the library’s public art program and the introduction of Waukesha Reads and numerous other community collaborations.

Under her direction, the Waukesha Public Library was named the 2011 Wisconsin Library of the Year by the Wisconsin Library Association.

"Jane's 27 years of experience as Director of the Waukesha Public Library will be fondly remembered," said Paul Kasprowicz, president of the Waukesha Public Library Board of Trustees, in a news release. "Her capacity for innovation, creativity and teamwork is truly exemplary. Jane consistently displayed a resourcefulness that reflects her brilliance and commitment to the Waukesha community."

For her service and dedication, Ameel will be honored with the Key to the City at the Waukesha Common Council meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
