Pay package for Waukesha administrator OK'd
Waukesha - After discussing Waukesha Administrator Lori Luther's performance in closed session, the Common Council Thursday night voted to increase her pay 1 1/2 % this year and, as she proposed, to withhold 5.8% of her salary for the state pension fund when other managers are subject to the withholding.
The combination of the higher pay and lower benefit means she could be in for a 4.3% pay cut this year. Her 2010 salary, frozen from the year before, was $115,304. A 1% increase effective Jan. 1 and another 1% in July would raise her pay to $117,034.
Identical increases are already in place this year for all other city employees.
The vote was 12-2, with Ald. Eric Payne and Joseph Pieper opposed.
Luther has an employment contract that can be changed only by mutual consent. She suggested the pension contribution - required of all public employees except for most in public safety - because it will be applied to city department managers and other employees without union contracts in place when and if a new state law takes effect.
The changes are part of a recently passed state law that curbs most collective bargaining rights, but the law is currently on hold while a court challenge proceeds.
Luther was evaluated for the first time by a new process, led by current and former Common Council presidents, after that task was stripped from Mayor Jeff Scrima last summer because his directions conflicted with council policies.
