Foundation awards $1.4 million in grants
Broad range of nonprofits benefit
Waukesha - The Greater Milwaukee Foundation said Thursday it had awarded about $762,000 in grants benefiting Waukesha County and $665,000 in Washington County during the fourth quarter of 2010.
Most of the money is designated to specific causes by donors.
In Waukesha County's case, about $503,000 was directed to a multitude of causes and agencies by donors, said Jim Marks, director of special projects for the Foundation.
Of the remaining grants, the largest awarded by the Foundation board was $75,000 to the Waukesha County Community Dental Clinic. That will allow the clinic to continue serving low-income children and pregnant women. Since 2008, when the clinic opened, it has provided more than $2.4 million in dental care to about 4,600 patients, the foundation reported.
Another large discretionary grant was $37,430 to a "nonprofit management fund" used to assist nonprofit agencies with such things as planning, technology, marketing, accounting and human resource management. Marks said six nonprofits will benefit from the new awards - the Pregnancy Support Connection, the Waukesha County Christmas Clearing Council, Ten Chimneys Foundation, St. Joseph Medical and Dental Clinic, Hebron House of Hospitality and Family Service of Waukesha.
In Washington County, donors who targeted their funds gave $601,435, or 90% of the total awarded. The largest donor-advised grants were $100,000 each to the Museum of Wisconsin Art and the YMCA of Kettle Moraine.
Two other foundations' grants were announced as well.
The Oconomowoc Area Foundation, which partners with the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, approved $92,320 grants to 24 organizations, the largest of which was $10,000 for Angels Grace Hospice.
The West Bend Mutual Insurance Co. Charitable Fund, part of the West Bend Community Foundation, gave $113,750 to 32 organizations. The largest was $50,000 to the West Bend Economic Development Corp. It will be used to renovate pedestrian bridges between the east riverbank and the West Bend downtown district.
