Waukesha - Donations to the Salvation Army in Waukesha - both to the Red Kettle campaign and through other donations - have reached $577,000, exceeding the agency's highest-ever $535,000 goal by nearly 8%.

The goal was ambitious, higher than the $502,000 raised last year, because of higher demand for services for the needy and a loss of other grants this year.

Carol Lemirand, corps officer of the Waukesha operation, said about $392,000 was dropped into the kettles during the holiday season. With the count of other donations mailed in or dropped off nearly final, she said those funds are expected to total $185,000.

"One of the big bumps ($8,050) came from the West High School players," she said.

The high school theater group aimed to raise $8,000 for the Salvation Army, a figure pegged because, in their seasonal production of "It's a Wonderful Life," that was the amount of a missing bank deposit that threatened the health of the Building and Loan run by George Bailey.

School and church youth groups usually raise less than $1,000 for the campaign.

The higher donations will be needed. In addition to a $60,000 cut in a state emergency shelter grant for the Waukesha Salvation Army, United Way in Waukesha County has told the agency it will get 5% less in the first quarter of 2011, Lemirand said.

United Way will announce its final campaign total Feb. 4, spokeswoman Courtney Capes said. A final push toward the $4.3 million goal in December raised $90,000 in pledges, still shy of the amount needed.

"Based on the positive response to date and pending requests, we are confident we will achieve our goal," she said.

About Laurel Walker
Laurel Walker covered local, school and county government for 20 years -- the last half of that at the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel -- before she was named Waukesha County columnist in 1997. Today she writes about the people, places and events around metropolitan Milwaukee with a broad suburban focus. She was the youngest of nine children raised on a central Wisconsin farm before leaving the nest for journalism studies at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a masters degree at the University of Oregon. She has spent the last half of her life in Waukesha County, where she and her husband raised two sons. Though she has a fondness for life in Waukesha, she eagerly partakes in the culture of the big city to the east and the recreation of the forests to the west. With sons in the arts, she has a special fondness for symphonic music concerts and art museums. She finds peace in a good book at a Northwoods getaway weekend, adventure in family visits to the east and west coasts, and satisfaction in a column well-written that reaches readers.
