Waukesha alderman wants to end special deliveries for council
Waukesha - Newly elected Ald. John Kalblinger wants to stop the city's practice of having police or parking enforcement officers deliver weekly agenda packets to Common Council members.
"I think the police department has other more pressing things they could be doing that would serve the public rather than deliver our mail," he said Friday.
Tuesday's Common Council meeting includes a discussion of the practice.
"I'm sure some will think it's a good idea and some will be opposed," he said.
Packets of agendas, minutes and other records related to city meetings and business are prepared each Friday for the 15 aldermen and members of the news media. Reporters and a couple of aldermen pick up their own packets, but a parking enforcement officer picks up those for most of the aldermen. On Saturday morning, police spend about two hours delivering the envelopes to aldermen's homes, Kalblinger said.
"I see this as a convenience for aldermen," he said. "With budgets the way they are, I don't know if this is the mission or purpose of the Police Department."
Kalblinger, who defeated former Ald. Peggy Bull in a September recall election, said every alderman has access to City Hall at any time and could pick up their own information, as he does.
Some people have suggested that the city's meeting information could be distributed online, although not every alderman has access to the web. Kalblinger said that's a possibility "down the road."
