Waukesha - A 24-year-old Waukesha man remained jailed on Monday on $500,000 bail in connection with the shooting death Friday morning of his best friend.

Prosecutors intend to file a homicide charge against Steven P. Osburn in connection with the slaying of Zachary S. Gallenberg, 23, of Waukesha, according to an affidavit filed in Waukesha County Circuit Court.

Based on the affidavit, a judge determined there was probable cause to hold Osburn while authorities prepare the case against him.

According to the affidavit by Waukesha Police Detective Jeff Italiano:

Osburn called police at 3:34 a.m. Friday saying that he had been assaulted by his best friend and that if police did not come, he would shoot or kill his roommate.

Police officers responding to the address in the 2000 block of Cliff Alex Court S. saw a muzzle flash, indicating that shots had been fired.

They found Osburn outside, and he allegedly admitted that he had shot Gallenberg, who was outside the residence bleeding and unresponsive.

Gallenberg was taken to Waukesha Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Gallenberg suffered a single gunshot wound to the upper torso, according to court records.

Witnesses reported that shots had been fired about 12:50 a.m. Friday, but that the first call to 911 did not occur until about 3:30 a.m.

A friend who was present at the time of the shooting told police that Gallenberg and Osburn had been drinking all night at a bar and at the residence.

The woman said the two had been friends for many years but often fought and yelled at each other about military differences as "Osburn was in the Army and Gallenberg in the Marines," the affidavit states.

According to the affidavit, police have had contact with Osburn at the residence in the past and that he suffers from post traumatic stress disorder.
