2014 Wisconsin State Fair

The end of July and beginning of August means many things to Wisconsinites.   From beginning to hunt for the perfect school supplies to the start of Packer training camp and final summer vacations, our state’s residents are active.  A big attraction is attending, volunteering, or working at the Wisconsin State Fair.

The 2014 Wisconsin State Fair begins July 31 and continues through August 10, 2014, at State Fair Park, West Allis.  The 2013 Wisconsin State Fair had 1,012,552 attendees during the 11-day fair, the largest reported attendance since 1969.  The 2013 Wisconsin State Fair reports over 387,000 cream puffs sold, over 120,000 slides down the Giant Slide, over 105,000 ears of corn sold at the New Berlin Lion’s Club Corn Roast, and 122,500 pounds of food donated to the Hunger Task Force.

The Wisconsin State Fair has a history almost as old as our state.  The first Wisconsin State Fair was at Janesville during 1851, only three years after Wisconsin became a state.  That first state fair had a 200 pound squash, a quarter-acre plowing competition, and attendance between 13,000 and 18,000. Over the Wisconsin State Fair’s 16 decades the fair was at Watertown, Fond du Lac, Madison, and Milwaukee before settling permanently at its current West Allis location during 1892.  The Fair was canceled only five times.  The Civil War led to the state fair cancelled 1861-1863.  During 1893 the state fair was cancelled because the World’s Columbian Exposition Fair at Chicago concerned officials the Wisconsin state fair attendance would be too low.  The state fair was cancelled during 1945 at the request of the Office of War Transportation due to World War II.

The Wisconsin State Fair hosted many events during its 163 year history.  From fairgoers paying 10 cents for the chance to drive their carriages around Cold Spring Race Course located in the area of 27th Street to 35th Street and Juneau Street to Vilet Street during the 1852 state fair, to the Green Bay Packers beating the New York Giants 27-0 for the Seventh National Football League Championship during the 1939 Fair, to numerous musical groups performing at state fair, to amazing foods, there is always something for everyone at Wisconsin State Fair.

The 2014 Wisconsin State Fair promises to once again up the benchmark for state fairs of the future.  This year’s 180 food vendors have upped their game with 72 new foods including a peanut butter bacon bison burger and beer ice cream with pretzel toffee.  The new selections bring the total of foods you may purchase on a stick to over 100 at the 2014 Wisconsin State Fair.  Feel free to wash down your food on a stick with a 25 cent glass of milk at the Milwaukee Buck’s Milk House.

The Wisconsin State Fair is diverse, fun, and entertaining.  From Superior to Beloit, La Crosse to Manitowoc, Milwaukee to Poy Sippi, Wisconsin is made up of people with a variety of backgrounds.  Enjoying the many animal, cooking and baking, wine and beer, sewing, arts, textiles, photography, and plant exhibits by Wisconsinites is entertaining and informative.  Wisconsinites proudly wear giant foam cheese heads, drink from bubblers, and eat at Friday fish fries.  The rest of the country may think we are interesting, and we are, because all Wisconsinites know Wisconsin living make us some of the luckiest people in the world.  While surviving Wisconsin winters builds character, enjoying summer and Wisconsin State Fair gives us reason to celebrate.  The Wisconsin State Fair celebrates all that is Wisconsin.

During your visit to the 2014 Wisconsin State Fair, July 31 through August 10, 2014, please stop at the New Berlin Lions Club Corn Roast located by the 30-foot inflatable corn ear at the corner of Central Avenue and Second Street.  Come visit me and other Lions and Lioness Club volunteers at the booth powered by volunteer labor with 100 percent of the profits benefiting various charitable organizations throughout the state.  Be sure to get a beverage at the Lioness soda booth.
